Sixty-one days of one conversation between two people, read by a machine for what was felt rather than what was said, and drawn as a single field.draft
The Pattern is made from a real conversation: a WhatsApp thread between the artist and one other person, 3,512 messages across sixty-one days. The machine read the export and counted it. It was allowed to name seven feelings and no more. Each message became a mark, hers above one line and his below it, grouped day by day, so that the whole conversation became one field that can be taken in at a glance.
No message is shown. No date of the conversation appears, and the other person is not named, quoted or simulated; the artist refused to build a chatbot of him. What remains is the shape: who wrote more, which day was loudest, where the silences fell.
The work ends with the machine's own report, which says what numbers can and cannot hold: ‘I know who reached out. I do not know who held on.’ Then her answer appears. The artist's working note for the project reads: closure through data, not simulation.
